What Do You Catch in an Assessment Centre?

The objective of this study was to conduct a construct validation of the Assessment Center (AC) developed by the Center for Leadership Development (Center för LedarUtveckling; CLU) in the City of Gothenburg. The study is done in cooperation with Psykologiförlaget AB. The final results of the assessments are presented as seven competence criteria: Influence Others, Sensitivity to Others, Social Assuredness, Change Orientation, Goal and Results Orientation, Analytical Ability, and Comprehensive View. The present study limits itself to investigating the construct validity of the competence criteria presented above and an overall AC-score (Overall Assessment Rating; OAR), which is operationalized as the summated evaluation of the seven competency criteria. The construct validation examines the relations between OAR, the seven competency criteria, and the measures of personality and ability. The results show that personality (Extraversion) and ability significantly explain the individual differences in performance among the different participants in an AC.

The Study was done by Anders Sjöberg in cooperation with Eva Bergvall Head of Center for Leadership Development, City of Göteborg.
