Research on 360 and the Effects of the Ethnicity of the Raters and Target Manager
One of the most damaging and effective barriers to the career prospects of Black and Minority Ethnic managers seems to be bias in appraisals of performance, and a lack of performance feedback. While a number of studies have investigated the issue, none seem to have examined 360-degree feedback ratings. This presentation discusses the findings of a study examining 360-degree feedback reports of 210 White and 210 Black and Minority Ethnic UK middle- and senior-level public sector managers, including some interesting potential insights into bias in appraisal by different types of rater and the possible effects of a lack of feedback on Black and Minority Ethnic managers’ self-perceptions.
