Does It Work in Asia? Indonesia's Experience with Assessment Center Methodology

Indonesia, one of Asia's developing countries, is currently facing major changes since the political reform that occurred in 1998. The issues of transparency; fairness and equality in all processes and systems in the country become apparent. This also impacts the process, criteria, and method of selection utilized in selection and promotion programs of government and private organizations.

Daya Dimensi Indonesia has assessed more than 2,000 participants from different managerial levels in various organizations in the country. We have come across challenges in implementing the method, and we have made extensive effort in adjusting the delivery to best fit the culture/environment yet maintain each program's quality, validity, and integrity.

The presentation covers this macro background as well as the efforts done to face the challenges. One of these efforts is establishing a "Code of Conduct" for assessment center operations in the country. This was the initiative of Daya Dimensi Indonesia who invited other Assessment Center providers and users; and participants agreed to form a national task force for developing the code. The presentation also showcases some Assessment Center results and/or findings based on our experience in delivering programs over the last 3 years.

I took my master degree in Hospital Management, I received a title Master of Public Health. I have been interviewed by several hospital, but I was very disappointed at that time, because they offered me an administrative job, like Personnel. When my colleague asked me to join DDI, I was very interested. Started from an associate Assessor in June,1999, I was hired as a full timer in December 1999. Now I am working as a Consultant in Selection And Assessment Services at PT Daya Dimensi Indonesia, an authorized representative for Development Dimensions International.
