Julie Murphy
General Manager of Human Resources
Heinz USA

I joined Heinz over four years ago as the Manager of Organization Development. In 2000, I was promoted to the role of General Manager of HR with the Heinz Sales Company. Recently, my HR responsibilities expanded to cover all Heinz shared service functions of Sales, Finance, Operations, and IT. In this role, I direct all of the human resource activities for the shared service functions. My areas of responsibility include selection and assessment, learning systems, compensation design and performance improvement.

Before joining Heinz, I spent 9 years in the consulting industry. My area of specialization included managing large-scale culture change and process improvement initiatives for many Fortune 500 organizations. Prior to consulting, I spent 6 years in operations with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Black and Decker, Inc. I have a BS in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC and an MSIA (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

I live in a small, historic borough named Thornburg, near Pittsburgh, PA. My husband, Robert, is Director of Information Systems for a consulting firm. We spend our rare free moments working on our 100 year-old home. Four of the most rewarding (and lovable) "projects" that I am currently managing are my children: Shane is seven years old, Ellen Claire is four years old, and Evan Paul and Anna Rose are 18 month old twins.

A mid-westerner by birth (Nebraska), I am a true American - having lived in seven states prior to being married and a total of 11 states since. We look now for Pittsburgh to be home for many years.

Shortly before graduating from Brigham Young University with a BA in Organizational Communications, I served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then married my wife, Shelli. We have five children - Mary (21), Leisel (19), Grady (16), Logan (13), and Cedar (9).

I began my career in Human Resources as an intern with McGraw-Hill in NYC. My first full-time position was with Perkins Restaurants in Minneapolis. Since then I have held increasingly responsible HR and OD positions with Jerrico, Inc. (restaurant industry), Frito-Lay, FMC Corporation (phosphorus chemicals), Hunt-Wesson, Ameripol-Synpol (synthetic rubber/carbon black), and now Heinz North America. Believe me when I say that I'm happy to be back in the food business and with such a great employer as Heinz. Outside of work, I enjoy being with my family. I actively serve in my church and as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. I am an avid reader and I love music.
